Step 1 — Download Ledger Live
Always download Ledger Live from the official source. Use the vendor domain and verify the TLS certificate in your browser. Desktop apps are available for Windows, macOS and Linux; mobile apps are available for iOS and Android. Prefer the desktop installer for initial onboarding because it typically offers the most complete flow (firmware checks, app manager, and restore tools).
Quick verification: On a typical consumer setup, confirming you are on the official site (check the URL) is sufficient. In high-security or corporate environments, verify checksums or digital signatures if provided by the vendor.
Step 2 — Install Ledger Live
Run the installer for your platform and follow the prompts. On macOS you might need to allow the app in System Preferences → Security & Privacy. On Linux, you may need to install packages or add udev rules for USB access by non-root users. After installation, launch Ledger Live — the app will guide you through the initial flow and indicate whether you should set up a new device or restore an existing one.
Step 3 — Initialize your Ledger device
When you connect the Ledger device to your computer with the supplied cable, the device will power on and display prompts on its own screen. These prompts are the authoritative source of truth. Choose to set up a new device if you’re starting fresh. The device will ask you to choose a PIN; enter the PIN using the device buttons — never type it on your computer. The device will then generate a recovery phrase (usually 24 words) which you record on the supplied recovery card.
Important: Write the seed words clearly and in order. Confirm them using the device’s verification prompts. Do not store the recovery phrase digitally (no photos, no notes, no cloud storage).
Step 4 — Verify firmware & update via Ledger Live
Ledger Live performs authenticity checks and will prompt to install official firmware updates when needed. Firmware updates fix security issues and add features; apply them only through Ledger Live and confirm prompts on the device. If the authenticity check fails or you see unusual warnings, stop and consult official support resources — do not proceed with an update from untrusted sources.
Step 5 — Install apps & add accounts
Ledger devices use small, signed on-device apps to support different blockchains. Use Ledger Live’s Manager to install the apps you need (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). Then add accounts in Ledger Live. Ledger Live discovers addresses based on your seed and installed apps and shows balances and transaction history provided by network providers. Label accounts to organize funds — for example, “savings,” “trading,” or “cold storage.”
Step 6 — Receiving and sending funds safely
To receive funds, generate a receive address in Ledger Live and confirm that the address shown in Ledger Live matches the device screen. For sending, Ledger Live constructs the transaction and forwards it to your device to sign. Always verify recipient address, amount, and fee on the device screen before approving. The hardware display cannot be altered by host software and is your single source of truth.
Test transaction: For new services or unfamiliar addresses, send a small test amount first to validate the workflow before transferring larger sums.
